It may just be a matter of time before
Sony becomes the brand of choice for photography lovers – amateurs and
professionals alike. The range offered by Sony seems to have something
for everyone; the Sony Alpha 58K is just one of them.
Technology First
SLT (Single-Lens Translucent)
technology employs a semi-transparent mirror which remains fixed unlike
the reflex mirror in DSLRS which claps up when the shutter release
button is pressed. Since the mirror doesn’t move, it leads to faster
shooting speeds and full-time phase detection autofocus while recording
both stills and movies.
The trade off is that the viewfinder is a
electronic one unlike the optical view-finder of SLRS. This is hardly a
concern if you are not obsessed with an optical viewfinder.
In most SLRs, as soon the Live-view is
put on (for recording movies and for macro work) the focusing becomes
contrast detection which is painfully slow for photography as well as
shooting movies.
A glance at its core features will explain why it could be the camera everyone loves.
* 20.1-megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS Sensor: A
20 MP sensor is just right for most of the shooters who don’t want an
extremely high-res file to work with. Frankly, even half the megapixels
are more than enough for most purposes.
* High-resolution, High-contrast OLED Tru-Finder™: Framing,
focusing and real time preview of exposure adjustments become intuitive
with the OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder. Because of Sony’s
proprietary Translucent Mirror Technology one could accurately monitor
the results of chosen settings by faithfully displaying details exactly
as they appear(including the exposure)
* 15-point AF system with 3 cross sensors: A
15 point autofocus liberates the photographer to place the subjects
even in peripheral areas of the frame. Cross-sensors ensure that one is
able to gather focus even in low-lit and lo-contrast conditions with
accuracy.
* Tilt-able LCD Screen: Sony’s
LCD screen is tiltable and helps get a clear shot from almost any
angle. The 2.7-type screen displays images brightly at 460,800-dot
resolution.
* Quick AF: Both quick
and continuous autofocus, create memorable movies with amazing clarity
at Full HD resolution, the continuous phase-detection AF utilises the
same speed and accurate focusing for both stills and movies. You can
record at 60i (50i)* for super smooth playback or 24p (25p)* for a
cinematic look. Or use P/A/S/M (Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter
Priority and Manual) modes to expand your moviemaking creativity
* Continuous shooting of 8FPS: A
difficult to imagine capture speed up to 8 images (at full
20.1-megapixel resolution) in one second is realized in A58. Couple with
this the accelerated full-time continuous phase-detection autofocusing,
this beast is able to achieve unsurpassable image precision and
clarity.
* Picture Effect: One
of the latest features available on A-mount cameras, Picture Effect
enables you to freely express your personal style. With 11 different
tools and filters to edit your photos and movies as you shoot,
creatively add partial colour effects, toy or retro camera effects and
more to enhance the overall look of your images and videos.
* Sweep Panorama: Simply
sweep your α58 to capture expansive landscapes. Press the shutter and
the camera will automatically record, seamlessly stitch a sequence of
photos to create spectacular images.
* Multi-Frame NR (Noise Reduction): α58
makes shooting in low-light environments especially easy, by shooting
six images and compositing them to achieve noise reduction equivalent to
a 2-stop lower shutter speed. This a notable feature for people who
want less-noisy images made at high ISO values in extremely low-lit
surroundings.
* Wide-Ranging ISO 100-16000 Sensitivity: Shoot
beautiful photos with natural tonal gradations and low noise, even in
dim lighting – without using a flash. Auto ISO also provides outstanding
results and you can select settings manually to suit any occasion.
* Steadyshot with Image Stabilization And Anti-Dust Technology: One
could mitigate the shake introduced in the images made at slow-shutter
speeds with Sony’s stabilization technology which is housed in the
camera instead of the lens. When using any A-mount lens (including
professional Carl Zeiss® and G Lenses™), image stabilization built
within the camera gets automatically activated and provides compensation
equivalent to approx. 2.5-4.5 steps in shutter speed. An anti-dust
coating on the surface of the image sensor endeavors to keep the images
blemish-free.
